Recognition by the international community as a democratic and economic leader in Africa has made Ghana a magnet for tourists. Ghana is also rich in natural resources and has one of the strongest emerging economies in Africa. Despite this, most of Ghana’s poor live in rural areas without basic services such as health care and clean water.

Community Impact

Mr. Victor Narteh is the one of the leaders of the Bawaleshie Trust Bank. He was granted a facility of $500 USD. He lives with his wife and his children and grandchildren in a big family house. He used the funds to complete the construction of a public toilet facility in the community. For several years the community did not have a good public toilet facility and many of the people could not afford to have a private bathroom and toilet. They had to walk for a long distance to nearby communities to have access to a toilet facility. However, because of the loan, a public toilet has been constructed.

Mr. Narteh generates income from the use of the Public Toilet Facility. Part of the income is used to maintain the facility and the remaining; he uses to care for his family.

Successful Expansion

felicia2Madam Felicia Narteh lives in Bawaleshie with her husband, 5 children and one dependant. Madam Felicia has been running a small local restaurant in the community for several years. She took a loan from Medi Ghana in an amount of $400 USD. The loan was used to expand the building structure of the local restaurant to make it more spacious.

This has improved her income level because she is able to serve larger groups of people. Now, Felicia is able to take care of her family. Furthermore, the people in the community have better access to food because of the expansion project.
