Europe’s second largest country, Ukraine is a land of wide, fertile agricultural plains, with large pockets of heavy industry in the east. In the 1930s, Stalin’s agricultural collectivism in Ukraine led to forced famines, killing over eight million people within the “bread basket” of the Soviet Union. When the USSR collapsed, much of Ukraine fell into poverty and almost 40% of the rural population remains there today.
